11-YEAR OLD HERO ...
Posted On 11/27/08 @ 01:10 am

You may have seen this story.

There is no shortage of heros (and heroines) in our great country ... and they come in all shapes, colors, sizes .... and ages.  As you give thanks today, I'm sure you'll consider those who have little ... and (perhaps) those who are little.  The young man in this video proves that you can be little and have a gigantic heart.

RIDER DOWN - Healing Energy Requested
Posted On 11/19/08 @ 04:07 pm

I received this message (below) from Ducky's (PeacefulAcresRider)'s friend Carl.  The message was sent through Ducky's account (which Ducky has allowed to happen with several of his close pals).  I suspect the message was sent to all Ducky's BFH friends.  I'm posting it here so that (if you feel like it) you can send some postive energy out his way.  He's up (and I mean UP) in Montana, and struggling with a plethora of health issues.  Those of you who know him, know that he's a good man.  Those of you who don't know him, should introduce yourselves.

I received the message yesterday (11-18-08), and I hope a subsequent update will bring some good news.

Please keep Ducky in your heart and in your thoughts.  Thank you!!

Here's the link to his BFH page:

Ducky has been down and out of it since satureday nite. He told us on wednesday he was having memery trouble and called for a home nurse and his doctor. We have been here with him and the home nurses since. Up until monday morning he was unresponsive to touch or mine and his cousin Freds voice. He was awake for about 20 minutes monday morning around 8 am. He seemed lost and did not know where he was and had lost all concept of time. He thought it was still thursday nite. After he realised where he was he seemed happy the old crew came by after they finished their first work season with out him 2 weeks ago. I did not have the heart to tell him that I called them and they did not just happened to stop by for a visit. He asked if I herd from his girlfriend and I said yes and that made him smnile as well. The dark circles under his eyes seem to be slowly fading and his fever is still holding around 102.7. The nurse did draw blood and the doc will run tests to see if it is the cancer or pnewmonia kicking him. I know that things are just not right or the same with out him around. I have known ducky for many years and it kills me to see him down like this. If anything changes I will let you all know. Have a good week brothers and sisters.

NEW GULF WAR SYNDROME
Posted On 11/11/08 @ 06:23 pm

America gives it's veterans the gifts that keep on giving.  Not mentioned in this article is the Cancer and birth defects risk from exposure to Depleted Uranium (DU) munitions.  DU has a half-life of 4.5 billion years ... so it really keeps on giving.  If you're not aware of DU, then do yourself and some veterans a favor and get your Google on.  Thanks!

The new Gulf war syndrome

US soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan are being exposed to toxic chemicals that pose serious health risks

What does a war injury look like? In the case of Iraq, we tend to picture veterans bravely getting on with their lives with the help of steel legs or computerised limbs. Trauma injuries are certainly the most visible of health problems – the ones that grab our attention. A campaign ad for congressman Tom Udall featured an Iraq war veteran who had survived a shot to his head. Speaking through the computer that now substitutes for his voice, Sergeant Erik Schei extols the top-notch care that saved his life.

As politicians argue about healthcare for veterans, it is generally people like Sgt Schei that they have in mind, men and women torn apart by a bullet or bomb. And of course, these Iraq war veterans must receive the best care available for such complex and catastrophic injuries.

Unfortunately, the dangers of modern war extend far beyond weapons. As Iraqis know only too well, areas of Iraq today are among the most polluted on the planet – so toxic that merely to live, eat and sleep (never mind to fight) in these zones is to risk death. Thousands of soldiers coming home from the war may have been exposed to chemicals that are known to cause cancers and neurological problems. What's most tragic is that the veterans themselves do not always realise that they are in danger from chemical poisoning. Right now, there is no clear way for Iraq war veterans to find out what they've been exposed to and where to get help.

In October, the Military Times reported on the open-air pits on US bases in Iraq, where troops incinerate tons of waste. Because of such pits, tens of thousands of soldiers may be breathing air contaminated with burning Freon, jet fuel and other carcinogens. According to reports, soldiers are coughing up blood or the black goop that has been nicknamed "plume crud".

In other cases, soldiers may have been exposed to poisons spread during efforts to restore Iraq's infrastructure. In 2003, for instance, members of the Indiana national guard were put in charge of protecting a water-treatment plant. They were told not to worry about the bright orange dust lying in piles around the plant, swirling in the air and gathering in the folds of their uniforms. In fact, Indiana soldiers spent weeks or months in a wasteland contaminated with sodium dichromate. The chemical, made famous after its role as the villain in the movie Erin Brockovich, is used to peel corrosion off of water pipes. It is a carcinogen that attacks the lungs and sinuses.

Today, a decade and a half after the first Gulf war, we know that such exposure may lead to widespread suffering. In 1991, veterans began to exhibit fatigue, fevers, rashes, joint pain, intestinal problems, memory loss, mood swings and even cancers, a cluster of symptoms and conditions referred to now as Gulf war syndrome (or illness). For years, the US department of defence maintained that stress caused the veterans' symptoms. Veterans groups blamed war-related toxins. This year, the National Academy of Sciences published an extensive review of years of scientific study of Gulf war illness that concluded a cause and effect relationship existed between the widespread illnesses among veterans and exposure to powerful neurotoxins. Complementing the US studies is an emerging body of epidemiological data linking increased incidence of Iraqi cancer, birth defects, infant mortality and multi-system diseases to toxic exposure.

Strangely enough, though, there has been almost no discussion of whether today's soldiers – those fighting in Iraq or Afghanistan – have also been injured by wartime poisons. We don't have a word yet for the constellation of cancers, psychological ills and systemic diseases that may be caused by toxins in today's wars.

In order to care for our veterans, we must do more than offer state-of-the-art hospitals and high-tech prosthetics. Veterans will need information about what poisons they have breathed or touched or drunk and when.

What would such an effort look like? First the military would need to disclose all known incidents of toxic exposure. Then it would have to reach out to veterans and give them information about how to receive care for conditions that arise from this exposure.

This summer, senator Evan Bayh made a first stab at such a system. Bayh pushed the national guard to track down hundreds of those Indiana soldiers who may have breathed orange dust back in 2003. Most of the soldiers are now civilians scattered across the US, unaware that they are at high risk for lung cancer and other respiratory diseases. Some of them may already be struggling with illness. The national guard is making an effort to search for these veterans and provide them with a phone number to call in order to seek medical help.

That's a good first step. But what about all the other veterans who believe that they have returned home from the war healthy? Without knowing it, they may be carrying a small bomb inside them. And they have a right to know.

VETERANS GROUPS SUE VA OVER CLAIMS DELAYS
Posted On 11/11/08 @ 05:08 pm

I thank everyone who has sent me a Veterans Day "Comment" (words, graphics, etc.), as I'm a vet and I believe that on this day (and on all days), we should give pause to reflect on the service and sacrifices made by our veterans.  Veterans should be honored and treated with dignity, propriety, and respect.  Unfortunately, that's not the case in our great country.  Please read a headline (today) story below ... but first, allow me to share an experience I had with the Veterans Administration only a couple days ago (Sunday).

Sunday (Nov. 9, 2008) I called the VA's Southern California 24 hr "Telecare" line (877-252-4866) for a good friend, a veteran who is 75 years old.  He did not require "emergency" attention, but he needed to make an "appointment" and get urgent medical advice.  He had tried several times to call, but he was too sick (with ulcerative colitis - he has had Cancers to his colon, throat and brain, also) and too weak to remain on telephone "hold" for a long time.  I told him that I would call for him from my house.  I had his name and "last-4 of his Social Security number).  I was on hold for over a half hour ... and when a woman finally answered the call, I told her that I had waited a long time.  I had expected a reception person to answer my call, take information and have a nurse call back, but my call was actually answered by a nurse.  This nurse was a really friendly, caring and concerned person.  She said she was sorry it took so long to answer, but she was the ONLY person answering .... for 5 VA hospitals.  She told me that several days prior, the (regional) VA phone system broke down, and she was returning urgent calls to veterans with her own cell phone.  Something is shamefully wrong with this picture?  It's disgraceful, and unacceptable.  I've dealt with the VA for 40 years after my Army discharge, and have had a staggering number of horrific personal experiences, but have heard of many, many more from other vets.  The VA is a mess.  If enlistees knew the kind of treatment and service they can expect when (or if) they ever make it through the military and truly needed care ... I doubt they'd enlist.  Do some veterans get good service from the VA?  Yes, some do, but not nearly enough.  I am proactive, and a member of several veterans groups (including VVA).  If you are truly interested in our veterans, I encourage you to advocate for their fair treatment.  I wrote to 5 major news media yesterday, and I continue to fight for veterans rights.   Happy Veterans Day!!

John

Veterans groups sue VA over claims delays

seattlepi.com   -   November 11, 2008

Two powerful veterans groups that span generations, the
Vietnam Veterans of America and the more recent Veterans of Modern Warfare, announced Monday that they are suing the Department of Veterans Affairs over "unacceptable delays" in veterans claims.

The lawsuit demands that the VA provide an initial decision on every veteran's claim for disability benefits within 90 days and resolve appeals within 180 days, and seeks relief to provide a lifeline of interim benefits if the VA delays last beyond the limit.

According to a VMA press statement, "The VA acknowledges that it takes an average of at least six months to reach an initial decision on an average benefits claim; the actual delay is closer to a year. Appeals of these initial decisions, which are reversed more than 50 percent of the time, take, on average, more than four years, with some stretching 10 years or more. In contrast, private healthcare plans - which process more than 30 billion claims a year - process claims and related appeals in less than three months."

The VVA, whose motto is "never again will one generation of veterans abandon another," adopted the VMW as their legacy group. VMW focuses upon helping veterans who have served since the 1991 Persian Gulf War, including Iraq and Afghanistan veterans.

"We're hoping or a lot of success with this lawsuit," said VMW president Julie Mock, of Woodinville north of Seattle.

Mock, a 1991 Gulf War veteran who developed service-connected multiple sclerosis, said "we have many, many Gulf War veterans who still have not been service-connected for their illnesses. They have been waiting all this time and fighting the system for 16 years for illnesses that are clearly Gulf War related."

Mock said she also hopes to convince the Obama administration to name a woman veteran to head the Department of Veterans Affairs, which would be a first, as women have served in increasingly numbers. In keeping with the VVA motto, she said the growing needs of women veterans cannot be abandoned but must be included more in VA considerations.

By the way, if there is any confusion over differing VMW Web sites, the organization is in the process of updating and changing its online page from www.modernveterans.com to www.vmwusa.org.

FAUXNews LIES LEADING UP TO ELECTION
Posted On 11/06/08 @ 07:16 pm

If FOX (FAUX) News is one of your trusted resources for learning about things going on at home or around the world, then you are truly and seriously placing yourself at a disadvantage.  If you watched FAUX News during the lead-up to the election, then you remember that they persistently and insistently repeated the claim that McCain was closing or had closed the gap with Obama.  Well, here's a story you should be able to relate to quite well.  FAUX News is the mouthpiece for the neocon agenda.  If you may be interested, there's an *"action" you can take, if you wish to express your concern that our media give us the truth (see bottom of article).  One of my favorite quotes is, "As scarce as the truth is ... the supply has always far exceeded the demand" (by Josh Billings, 1865).  Most folks simply don't give a fuck if they get the truth or not.  They'd rather operate under fear and ignorance than truth and knowledge.

Action Alert : Fox News Nailbiter!

Conservative channel pushed notion of a tightening election

One of the most glaring peculiarities about the Fox News Channel's campaign coverage in the run-up to the November 4 election was the channel's frequent insistence, in the waning days of the campaign, that the election was remarkably close, with Republican John McCain surging.

In reality, few polls suggested this was happening (see PollingReport.com; Pollster.com), but Fox chose to give a handful of outlying, unrepresentative surveys considerable attention. It was as if the channel were less interested in accurately reporting the state of the campaign than in presenting an alternate reality that would be pleasing to partisan viewers.

Here's a sampling of that coverage, day by day:

October 27:

FOX NEWS ANALYST DICK MORRIS: I think that we have to understand that redistribution of income is liberal euphemism for socialism. And you know.

FOX NEWS HOST SEAN HANNITY:  Well, I -- and I agree. But let me move the ball a little bit here?. This is, obviously, a very sensitive issue for the Obama campaign. They feel like they've been exposed. It started with Joe the Plumber.

MORRIS: And they're hemorrhaging votes.... Zogby, Rasmussen, and Gallup, all have this race five points apart?. Zogby down from 12, Rasmussen down from eight, and Gallup down from six. And Investors Business Daily has it to 2.8, and Zogby had a one-night finding of three. The averages that over three nights.

October 28:

"Let me put up on the screen the latest polls, because we've had a tightening in many of them. Likely voters, Gallup, it's a two-point race. Zogby, now four-point. AP, it's dead even. IDP, another close race. Obviously spread the wealth, socialism, Obama's welfare plan is not going over well with the American people."

  --Sean Hannity

FOX NEWS ANALYST NEWT GINGRICH: "I got a report earlier this evening that in the very, very close states that, in fact, McCain has closed the gap substantially, and that internal polling now shows him within pretty good striking distance in every single close state.

HANNITY: Well, we're going to go over some of these polls. The likely voter poll, Gallup, now has a two-point race.

October 29:

FOX NEWS ANCHOR MARTHA MacCALLUM: McCain is blasting Obama, saying his rival doesn't have what it takes to protect America from terrorists. And that kind of tough talk may be helping him a bit. Here's a look at new Rasmussen Poll showing McCain gaining ground with Obama at 50 to McCain's 47. That's the first time in this particular poll that McCain has been within three points of Barack Obama in more than a month. Fox's Carl Cameron is with the McCain camp live in Riviera Beach, Florida tonight....

FOX NEWS CORRESPONDENT CARL CAMERON: Well, for the last several weeks, Senator McCain has been focusing on economic issues. And if anything sort of to be credited with his apparent surge and the tightening in the national polls, it would be presumably be his emphasis on Barack Obama's economic policies, which McCain has sort of tattooed as tax-and-spend liberalism.

         * * *

NATIONAL REVIEW CONTRIBUTOR MARK STEYN: Clearly, something is working. Because I think whatever one makes of these polls, there is a general tightening direction. So, clearly, people are taking a second look at Obama and taking a second look at McCain.

HANNITY: Let me jump on that, Mark.? Look, it's Scott Rasmussen. It's Gallup, likely voters. It's Investor's Business Daily and that poll that's out. It's AP. It's Battleground. This is a two- or three-point race.

October 29:

"Fear is in the air. And while it initially helped Barack Obama, fear is now beginning to hurt him. Both the Rasmussen and Gallup daily tracking polls have the race getting tighter. And in a remarkable turnabout, Rasmussen will release a poll tomorrow that says Americans now trust McCain more on the economy than Obama. So NBC News will have to tone down the victory dance.

A series of Obama issues regarding spreading the wealth around have hurt him. Joe the Plumber and other expositions have caused some fear among undecided voters that an Obama administration will harm the economy more than help it. The USA remains a strong capitalist country, much to the chagrin of the far left. And deviation from capitalism isn't going to play well here, especially among older voters. And it is here where the swings are taking place, especially in places like Florida and Ohio."
--Fox News host Bill O'Reilly

October 30:

"But first--it is close, even closer than it was last night. It is now a three-point race for the White House. A new Fox News poll shows the race tightening, with Senator Obama at 47 percent and Senator McCain at 44 percent."
-- Fox News host Greta van Susteren

"Well, he [Obama] ought to be nervous because of the margin of error, and he also ought to be nervous because, clearly, the national race is tightening.... He's not a good closer. I mean, there is a resistance to him, a doubt about whether or not he's experienced and qualified enough to be president that causes people at the tail end of the race not to end up in his column, and I suspect we're seeing that again.... It's because of this persistent doubt that people have about Senator Obama."
-- Fox News analyst Karl Rove

"Now the polling, the Fox News poll, which shows Obama closing the gap from -- McCain closing it from 9 to 3 shows two completely different trends at work. Young people are turning away from Obama and toward McCain, driven by the tax issue."
--Dick Morris

MORRIS: My bet is McCain wins all of the undecided in this race.

HANNITY: Well, if that happens, he wins the race.

MORRIS: Right now it's tied.

HANNITY: If that.

MORRIS: No, right now it's about tied.

"Brand new Fox polls are in and this race is tightening."
--Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly

"The latest Fox News/Opinion Dynamics Poll of likely voters nationwide, which Major Garrett was just mentioning, shows that the race is tightening considerably from last week, with Barack Obama's overall lead over John McCain is shrinking from nine points to three; that's within the margin of error."
--Fox News correspondent James Rosen

October 31:

"We are down to the wire. And guess what? The race is far from over. The Associated Press is reporting that a study shows one in seven are persuadable. That means this isn't over. And if you don't believe that, how about this news? The polls are tightening. A new Fox News poll shows Senator Obama at 47 percent and Senator McCain at 44 percent."
-- Greta van Susteren

HANNITY:One of the more amazing things is the numbers of undecided, anywhere between eight and 14. You know Dick Morris interprets that that is -- that means Obama can't close the deal and that people have doubts about him and it appears by the tightening that's going on that those voters are moving toward Senator McCain. Do you share that analysis?

ROVE: I think Dick is largely right. There has been a persistent nagging concern on the part of the American people about whether or not Barack Obama is qualified to be president.

* * *

HANNITY: Are you looking at the polls? There's a real tightening going on. Very interesting to me, as it's happening. Seems Barack Obama cannot close. Why?

FOX NEWS ANALYST MIKE HUCKABEE: I think there is the lingering doubt as to what he's going to do to people's personal income. This is not about -- you know, right now it's not about even terrorism or international affairs. Joe the plumber hit the reset button on this entire election.

"Apparently, for our audience's sake, apparently, big move in the polls. McCain up by one, Drudge is reporting, in the latest Zogby poll. It's going to come out tomorrow."
--Sean Hannity

"In a surprise turnaround, get this, a brand new Fox News poll find that John McCain is surging among younger voters, those under 30 years old. He is catching up to Barack Obama's 48 percent, McCain has 43 percent. I think those numbers are wrong - 48 to 58 percent among voters under the age of 30."
--Fox News host Heather Nauert

NAUERT: ... McCain has gained 10 points with the youth vote within the last week?

MORRIS: Yes. In the last week, among voters 18 to 30, McCain has vis-a- vis Obama has closed the gap by 20 points.

November 2:

"Two days and counting until you decide our next president. With the polls tightening, is John McCain about to pull off one more remarkable comeback?"
--Fox News Sunday anchor Chris Wallace

November 3:

SEAN HANNITY: Investors Business Daily, which was the most accurate poll in the last presidential election, now has it down to a two-point race.? You know, Colorado was just, you know -- a week and a half two weeks ago, it was supposed to be a blowout. It's now right there at the margin of error. The same with the state of Virginia. Again, that was, you know, supposed to be a blowout. And then we look, for example, we've got Senator McCain is up in Florida. He's tied in Missouri. He's now up in North Carolina, which was supposed to be a blowout for Senator Obama. There--something has happened here fairly dramatic. And do you think that this could even go further by the time people vote tomorrow?

NEWT GINGRICH: Well, I think, first of all, that the mistake of Senator Obama telling Joe the Plumber that he wanted to spread the wealth has clearly slowed down all the momentum for the Obama campaign, because it turns out most Americans are not very interested in having politicians decide to take their money out of their wallet and spread to it the politicians' friends. That may turn out, in retrospect, to have been the biggest single mistake of the campaign by Senator Obama.

"I think that -- I don't believe these polls. I do not believe any, but I agree with Dick Morris. Who knows what's going to happen tomorrow night."
--Sean Hannity

Sarah Palin 'did not know Africa was a continent', say aides

TimesOnline - November 6, 2008

Sarah Palin spent "tens of thousands" more than the quoted $150,000 on clothes for the Republican campaign, met McCain aides in her hotel room dressed in nothing but a towel, and did not know Africa was a continent, according to new reports.

Fox news has reported that Mrs Palin did not understand that Africa was a continent, not a country, and did not know what countries were in the North American Free Trade Agreement.

In separate claims made in the latest issue of Newsweek magazine, the Republican vice presidential nominee was reported to have been told to buy three suits for the Republican convention, and to hire a stylist. Instead, she went on a spending spree in upmarket stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus.

Quoting unnamed sources within the McCain camp, the magazine alleges that most of the clothes were bought by a wealthy donor, who "was shocked when he got the bill."

An angry aide described the shopping spree as "Wasilla hillbillies looting Neiman Marcus from coast to coast", and predicted that the truth would eventually come out when the Republican Party audits its books.

The magazine also claimed that Mrs Palin used low ranking staffers to buy some of the clothes on their credit cards, and that up to $40,000 was spent on clothes for her husband Todd.

A number of articles of clothing have been lost, the magazine states.

The disclosures are made in "How He Did It, 2008", in Newsweek's Special Election Project, a behind-the-scenes account of the presidential election produced the day after the polls closed.

The magazine also claims that at the GOP convention in St. Paul, when aides Steve Schmidt and Mark Salter went to her hotel room to brief her, Ms Palin walked into the room wearing only a towel, with another on her wet hair. She told them to chat to Todd, adding: "I'll be just a minute."

Other election revelations include that on the night Hillary Clinton officially lost the Democratic nomination, she enjoyed a long and friendly phone conversation with McCain.

"Clinton was actually on better terms with McCain than she was with Obama," reports the magazine. "Clinton and McCain had downed shots together on Senate junkets; they regarded each other as grizzled veterans of the political wars and shared a certain disdain for Obama as flashy and callow. "

PS:  In reality, my best wishes go out to Laura Bush ... Perhaps the best birthday present she got was getting George back and out of the public eye, so she can now start real divorce procedings.

On another (sour) note, did anyone think it was sadly conspicuous NOT to see Bush, Cheney and Condi at McCain's side for support ????  That is a picture that never was, but is still worth a thousand words.
